Venice

 

Megan, Gray, Jenny and Anders dropped us off at the Atlanta airport in plenty of time and we got through Security just fine. We waited in the business class lounge until time for us to board.  Lufthansa treats their passengers really well. We ate a good dinner, stretched out and “tried” to go to sleep. Surprisingly we actually did get some sleep! We were awakened an hour out of Frankfurt with coffee juice and croissants.

 




the Frankfurt Airport is huge. Thank goodness for business class lounges, showers, comfy chairs and good coffee.  We arrived at 7:00 AM and sat in the business lounge until 3:00 PM when we made our way to the gate to catch our plane to Venice. We landed in Venice on time got our luggage walked out and met the Viking Hostess (now we can relax as we are in the capable hands of Viking). She shuttled us to the driver (fresh from Monza) who would take us on a madcap ride from the Marco Polo airport to where the water taxis were. Viking paid the $65 fare and we had a wonderful time cruising the lagoon from Venice to the Lido island.

 


  
   
 


 

The weather was perfect as we navigated up a canal to the dock of the hotel Excelsior. This hotel is POSH in  I mean really posh! We got into our room freshened up a bit and went adventuring. The Venice Film Festival with Clooney and Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman and all those wonderful stars just left the day before, but we saw the red carpet and other evidence of the happening. Near the hotel we walked to the Bagno Marconi restaurant and had a wonderful Italian pizza. We sure wish someone would open up a real Italian pizzeria in Chattanooga.  Like native Italians we finished eating around 9:00, walked back to the hotel plugged everything in and said Buena Sera.

 September 1, 2024 When Viking sends the airport sticker and luggage tags, the trip becomes real.  One week from today we will be on the way.  Megan and Family will drive us to the Atlanta Airport next Sunday and stop by Tellus (an amazing science museum in Chatsworth GA) on the way back.   Shirley and I have tried to prepare by watching YouTube of Viking trips, Great Courses on the places we will visit and (surprise) reading books. We started the Novena for a safe trip last Thursday and have since been making lists and laying out our pack-ables and that effort will continue all this week. It seems there is always one thing that didn’t make the list.  This time it was my Bose cancelling headphones that I just happen to come across while hunting something else.   We will be sending notices of our Blog’s URL to those who have requested (and maybe some who should have    ) this week.  There is always a feeling of glad antici...

September 28, 2024 Istanbul to Atlanta Weather nice to post hurricane   We were able to sleep in today.  Missed the sunrise, alas. We had breakfast at the Hotel.  Shirley was able to recreate the breakfast she had 15 years ago in Istanbul, Yogurt, sour cherry syrup and cocoa puffs. Paul had a (boring) omelet. The coffee was really good.     After breakfast we went on a nice walk in the park next to the Hotel.       Our transfer was arranged to leave at 10 and we did.  A minibus managed to load the luggage for 12 passengers by utilizing some empty seats as well as the luggage compartments.  We made it to the Airport in 40 minutes.  It was Saturday, so there was very minimal traffic about.   We scanned our luggage after we entered gate 5 (business class gate) and so there were no lines.   September 24, 2024 Istanbul Weather - clear and 70's (beautiful!)     The Viking Sea steamed into Istanbul just before dawn.  Paul was up and got a picture of the Hagia Sophia as we steamed by the Golden Horn. We docked and with an early breakfast (the usual) we were eager to start the day. The cruise terminal in Istanbul is state of the art.  Able to hold 5 cruise ships, with an immigration station and a huge tour bus terminal underground beneath some upscale shops and eateries.  We found our bus (#15) easily although it was quite a walk, maybe 15 minutes.   Once underway we entered the parking lot disguised as the streets of Istanbul and made our way to a scenic overlook on the Asian side of the river.  (We docked near the Galata Tower on the European side.)
